My questions
– how are normal driving conditions in January (we live in the Pacific Northwest)
– planning on driving from Lisbon and drop car in Faro
– will it be worthwhile driving to Algarve than taking a train and rent there
 Thank You

Your rental car will come equipped with a toll reader. If you visit other then the insanely crowded summer months, you can avoid the tolls and take the N125 with the locals It parallels the A22 and goes through a number of small towns You’ll need to enjoy driving the roundabouts, as the free route is chock full of them. I live in the Algarve in the winter. It’s a magical place on the planet! I definitely recommend going off season.

Most Europeans who drive own a stick-shift car or at least know how to drive manually. In America, most people drive automatic and many never learn how to drive manual.

Thanks April! And no, a foreign drivers license was not required.

That’s a good question and I don’t remember paying any tolls in Algarve. It was super easy to rent and drive in that region (great roads as well) so don’t be anxious. You’ll have a wonderful time I’m sure! :) x

Did you by an chance run into issues with having to pay tolls? I’m considering renting a car with some friends to get around the Algarve from a home base in Lagos, but I’ve never rented a car in Europe before and am a little anxious!
